ENGLISH TOURING OPERA
A SEASON OF GREAT PLAYWRIGHTS IN OPERA

PROMISED END

‘Without any trigger, one night I dreamed of Lear in Japanese, and the dream remained’ – Alexander Goehr, 2010

English Touring Opera present a world premier by two revered Cambridge figures. Promised End is a new opera by leading British composer, Alexander Goehr, setting fragments of Shakespeare’s great tragedy King Lear, selected by scholar Sir Frank Kermode and the composer.

The opera is an intriguing drama, influenced by a range of world theatre and dance. In these 24 short scenes, the original’s themes are distilled and re-ordered to present one of the most powerful presentations of the play yet.

Goehr selected ETO to produce the world premier – a company he has come to know through their performances at the Arts Theatre. This world première production is directed by James Conway with designs by Adam Wiltshire and Guy Hoare. Ryan Wigglesworth conducts the award-winning, contemporary ensemble: Aurora Orchestra. The strong cast includes Roderick Earle as the besieged King, and Nigel Robson as his blinded vassal, Gloucester.
