Nothing But The Truth is one of the most important plays to have come out of post-apartheid South Africa. It is an exploration of the strained and complex relationship between those who remained in the country to lead the struggle against apartheid, and those who returned victoriously after living in exile.

In order to uncover ‘nothing but the truth’ about himself, Sipho Makaya, Assistant Chief Librarian at the Port Elizabeth public library, along with his daughter and his niece, must not only bury his dead, but leave behind betrayals, jealousies and animosities – domestically as well as politically – as his aspirations are dashed at the very moment democracy promises they might be realised.

John Kani is recognised throughout the world as South Africa’s greatest stage and film actor. He has received countless awards including a special Obie Award in New York for his extraordinary contribution to theatre, and the Best Actor Tony Award on Broadway.

‘A deeply felt portrait that delicately weaves the extraordinary
and the ordinary in its characters’ lives’ New York Times
