Cheek by jowl presents
THREE SISTERS
By Anton Chekov

Following their triumphant UK Tour of Twelfth Night, Cheek by Jowl’s stellar Russian ensemble returns with Chekov’s sweeping love story, Three Sisters, in what promises to be one of the highlights of the season.

Arguably the greatest play of the Twentieth Century, Three Sisters tells the tale of Olga, Irina and Masha, whose lives are turned upside down by the arrival of glamorous officer Veshinin to their remote town. Their eternal struggle to live and to love is charted with Chekov’s sharp eye and unfailing humanity.

Artistic Directors Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod’s Russian work was created for the Chekov International Festival with the same artistic principles that are at the heart of Cheek by Jowl. Over the next two years, the company will be presenting a further two shows from their sister Russian ensemble alongside their own new English language productions.

Produced by Chekov International Theatre Festival; Les Gémeaux/Sceaux/Scène Nationale; and La Filature/Scène Nationale de Mulhouse, in association with Cheek by Jowl.

‘Chekov’s characters, whom we think we know all too well, suddenly burst open, dazzlingly and unforgettably No one other than Donnellan could have achieved this. He is the first and the unrepeatable.’ Kommersant, Russia

‘An exquisitely acted production whose confident directness speaks straight to a British Audience’ The Guardian, Twelfth Night 2006

‘These Russians communicate non-verbal poetry to the audience as casually as if they were tossing roses’ The Sunday Times, Twelfth Night 2006

This performance will be performed in Russian with English surtitles.
