Behind the Scenes Project

We are undertaking a project to catalogue, protect and share the Theatre’s archive.

‘Behind the Scenes’ is our National Lottery Heritage Fund project exploring the history of our Theatre through its archive. In 2019-20, the project enabled us to unite our archive collections for the first time, improve our archive storage conditions, and create an archive catalogue. In 2021, we hope to dig even deeper into the archive to discover some of the fascinating stories which make up the Theatre’s history.

There are several ways to get involved:

1. Volunteer with us.

We are currently offering volunteer opportunities on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. As a project volunteer, you would:

•    Scan archive collection items and edit images.
•    Identify objects in the archive relating to project themes.
•    Research objects, individuals, and events in the archive.

If you have good spoken and written English, are IT literate, and enjoy working as part of a small and friendly team we would love you to volunteer with us.

To do so, please get in touch with Project Manager Dale Copley at dcopley@cambrigdeartstheatre.com

2. Aged 16-25? Train as an oral historian.

We are looking for local students aged 16-25 to conduct interviews with people associated with the Cambridge Arts Theatre – actors, producers, directors, employees, and patrons – as part of a series of oral histories to further enrich our archive with new perspectives on the theatre.

As a volunteer, you will receive accredited training by the Oral History Society – a great addition to your CV or UCAS application – and will be responsible for researching your interviewee, conducting and recording the interview itself, and summarizing the content of your discussion for the archive catalogue.

We can be flexible with your schedule, but you must be able to attend the Training Day on Tuesday 1 June 2021 and commit to undertaking at least four interviews (or more if you want!).

To apply, please email a short paragraph introducing yourself and explaining why you want to be involved with the ‘Behind the Scenes’ project to Katherine Moar at kmoar@cambridgeartstheatre.com by Monday 17 May 2021

3. Record your memories of the Theatre.

As part of the Project, we hope to record a series of oral histories to capture memories and individual experiences of the Theatre. Oral history is all about preserving personal perspectives and so we would like to record as wide a range of people as possible: actors, producers, directors, patrons, employees past and present...

Click here to view our Oral Histories page.

If you have a memory to share and would be willing to be interviewed, we would love to hear from you. You can also nominate someone else as a potential interviewee. To get involved, please contact Katherine Moar at: kmoar@cambridgeartstheatre.com

It would be very helpful to know the following information:

•    Name
•    What your/their connection is to the Theatre
•    The era you/they were active
•    Where in the country you/they are now
•    Your contact details (or in the case of a nomination whether you can put us in touch)

More information about what to expect from an oral history interview is available here.

4. Teacher or group leader?

We are developing a series of educational resources and ‘lesson starters’ for schools based on material in our archives. If you would be interested in obtaining these resources for your school or group for the start of the Autumn term 2021, please contact Dale Copley at dcopley@cambridgeartstheatre.com
