Dave Murphy to step down as CEO of Cambridge Arts Theatre

Cambridge Arts Theatre today announces that Dave Murphy is stepping down as CEO after 21 years.

Dave Murphy said today, “In light of the recent news of the transformational gift from the Gatsby Foundation for the refurbishment of our main auditorium and the Theatre shifting towards the implementation phase of the capital project, I have decided that with the future of the Theatre secured it is now the right time for me to step down from my role.”

I am hugely grateful for my time at the Theatre and want to thank the incredible team for their dedication and drive. I look forward to supporting the venue in the future as a collaborator and a loyal audience member in the magnificently refurbished Theatre.

The chair of Cambridge Arts Theatre’s trustees, Ian Mather, commented, “Across the organisation, we are sad to say farewell to Dave Murphy, who has been our driving force for over 20 years, leading us through the most difficult of times of COVID and the most joyous, in the hosting and production of shows which will live long in the memory.  He turned the fortunes of the Theatre around by attracting high quality productions leading to the growth of our audience. It was his vision that led to the forthcoming auditorium refurbishment and the planned creation of a second space. He will continue to have a close association with us including being the external producer of our panto this year, Cinderella. We all wish Dave every success in his new ventures with thanks for his commitment and creative ambition over the years.”

Whilst the Theatre embarks on the substantial task of preparing for the major building project ahead Victoria Beechey, the current Executive Director takes on the additional role of interim Co-Chief Executive alongside Rachel Tackley who will also be acting as interim Co-Chief Executive and Creative Director.
