Join Barrie Rutter OBE, plus special guest Emily Butterfield, to celebrate the Bard’s kings and queens – their achievements, conquests and foibles – with songs, stories, anecdotes and memories from a career of playing and directing Shakespeare’s Royals, with Northern Broadsides and beyond, all over the world.
Barrie promises to captivate audiences during the evening with passionate performances of key speeches, including playing Richard III alongside Emily as Queen Elizabeth. Prepare to be impressed by Barrie's extensive knowledge of the Bard’s work, delving into the history of these well-studied and celebrated characters.
Honoured with an OBE in 2015 for his outstanding contributions to drama, to founding Northern Broadsides and directing Lenny Henry as Othello, Barrie's passion for storytelling shines on and off the stage.

Barrie Rutter OBE
Born in Hull, Rutter began his acting career with the National Youth Theatre in 1964. After working at the National Theatre and The Royal Shakespeare Company, Rutter founded theatre company Northern Broadsides in Halifax in 1992.
Over his career, Rutter has played numerous Shakespearean Kings, including Richard III, King Lear and Henry V. As a director Rutter directed Lenny Henry in Othello in 2009 and directed Richard III for the Vanemuine Theatre Company in Estonia.
Rutter was awarded his OBE in 2015 for his services to drama.
As an actor, Rutter's credits include including Fat Friends, The Royal, Verdict, Casualty, The Bill and Heartbeat.
Emily Butterfield
Emily Butterfield trained at Drama Centre, London.
Her recent television credits include Hullraisers (Channel 4), Coronation Street (ITV), Doctors and Holby City (BBC).
Emily’s Theatre credits include: Queen of Chapeltown (West Yorkshire Playhouse), Alice In Wonderland (Octagon Theatre), An August Bank Holiday Lark (Northern Broadsides) and A Christmas Carol (The New Vic).
